A Man’s Best Friend Looks A Bit Different These Days…

When you think of common pet products and what they entail, you typically envision labels or commercials featuring America's most popular dog breed, the Labrador Retriever. Although the Lab is still at the top of the list, designer breeds such as the French Bulldog have made a drastic rise in popularity.

Today, you can spot the French Bulldog everywhere. You may spot them in the park, on a car ride or tagging along with their owner in a restaurant. They have gained exposure from movies, commercials and advertisements. Many famous celebrities such as Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Jackman, Hillary Duff and Lady Gaga also share a love for the breed.

According to the American Kennel Club, Frenchie's are known for being charmers. They don't bark much, and they make great watchdogs. They are overall a low maintenance breed as they don't require much grooming, and adapt well to life with singles, couples or families. They get along well with other animals, and they do not require a lot of outdoor exercise. These desirable traits can attest to why the breed has become more popular in recent years.

The Labrador Retriever made history in 2013 as being the longest held "top dog" on the AKC list. Also impressive, the French Bulldog jumped from 76th to fourth on the list in just 20 years.

2018/2019 AKC list of most popular dog breeds:

  1. Labrador Retriever
  2. German Shepherd
  3. Golden Retriever
  4. French Bulldog
  5. English Bulldog
  6. Beagle
  7. Poodle
  8. Rottweiler
  9. German Shorthaired Pointer
  10. Yorkshire Terrier

Although Frenchie's have several desirable traits, there are also a few concerns. This breed may not be for everyone, mostly because they are expensive. The French Bulldog can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000, and sometimes more. This breed can also have a variety of health issues including breathing problems, cleft palate and hip dysplasia.

French Bulldog breeders are excited the breed is becoming more popular, but also wary of breeders and owners that don't have the best intentions for the dog. Understanding all the facts and doing research before you adopt a dog is important to make sure it is a good fit for your lifestyle.
